The Chinese Embassy in the US sent condolences to Zbigniew Brzezinski's family on Saturday over his passing.

Brzezinski, former National Security Adviser to former US President Jimmy Carter, died at age 89 on Friday.

In a statement, the Chinese Embassy called the late statesman "an accomplished strategist and diplomat, and a long-time friend of the Chinese people," adding that his passing is "a loss for both China and the US."

"He made an important contribution to the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the US, and to supporting and promoting China-US relations throughout his career," said the statement.
